Invocation to Hapi
All: Akhet Peret Shemu!
Caller: Hail, Prince of the Great River!
Hail, Lord of the River Horse,
Keeper of the swimming cattle
With their outstretched open mouths.
Hail, Lord of the currents,
Whose flood time brings the fertile soil
To the red desert sands.
All: Akhet Peret Shemu!
Caller: Hail, Prince of the Great River!
You are the thin green line of life
That sustains the people of the desert,
Making them the people of the River.
Without your gift, there would be no place
For the other gods to place their feet.
All: Akhet Peret Shemu!
Caller: Hail, Prince of the Great River!
We honor you for your great gift,
And we honor the spirits of all rivers in your memory.
Bless us with fertile days
And flood us with your blessings.
Hail Hapi, Lord of the Nile!
All: Hail Hapi, Lord of the Nile!
Akhet Peret Shemu!
(The river water is passed around, and each is anointed with it. The rest is poured out as a
libation, and the rite is over.)
