Invocation to Maia
The Pleiades shine bright in the sky,
Seven stars and seven sisters.
But what is known and not known
Is that one sister came to earth,
And loved the great god Zeus,
And brought his child forth from her womb.
It was Maia who brought forth words,
It was Maia who brought forth precocity,
It was Maia who bought forth thievery,
It was Maia who brought forth quickness,
It was Maia who brought forth magic,
It was Maia who brought forth skill,
It was Maia who brought forth healing,
It was Maia who brought forth the serpent's tongue,
It was Maia who brought forth the guide to the Underworld,
And it was Maia who brought forth the messenger of Gods.
For when you bring forth a new thing,
A child of any kind,
Womb or mind or heart or soul,
You can never know what it will be
The day that it leaves your door
And flies like the rushing winds
Into its own destiny.
Chant:
I am word
I am wind
I am breath
I am spinning
On the edge
Of the blade
