Invocation to the Green Man of the Silver Fir Tree
Hail, Green Man of the Winter!
Evergreen silver as the moon
Reflecting the moonlight,
Tree of birth and the first day
When the new sun begins to grow,
Tree whose form is never naked
Like the silver virgin goddess.
Lapwing hiding in the river reeds,
Magpie calling harshly
In your black-and-silver dress,
Tree of the northern lands,
Elegantly covering the hillside
Even in the deepest snows.
We hail you, sacred fir tree,
Green Man of the Winter,
As we see the solstice fade behind us.
Chant:
The snow does not touch me
The cold does not slay me
I never lie sleeping
All winter I sing.
(Each comes forward and plants a seed in the pot of soil, saying, "Hail Green Man of the
Earth!" Water is poured onto the pot, and then the rest is poured out as a libation. Ring bell and
dismiss.)
